Imber Blu was born in Newport, Tennessee in 1984 but lived in Sevierville, Tennessee. She was the second born child of Robin and Gary and sister to her older brother, Adam. Her mother was a domestic engineer who enjoyed reading horror novels and watching horror movies. Imber started watching them with her at the age of six. Her father was the pastor of a Christian based church in a neighboring town and worked full time as a landscaper. Imber is a Christian as well. Her parents were married the entire duration of her childhood and early adulthood but divorced in 2004.
At the age of seven Imber wrote her first book. Her elementary school had told her that she could write and illustrate a book for a competition and so she did. Her small book, about an owl, was chosen as a winner in the contest and she was subsequently asked to, and did attend, the Young Authors Conference.
Over the course of the following years, Imber learned to play the flute and piano and won many local music, art and writing competitions. Most of which just included a ribbon for a prize. At the age of twelve Imber entered another local writing competition. This time in poetry. She had read the complete works of Shakespeare but had never written poetry and took it as a challenge. Imber remembers winning second place in that contest with the prize being a ten dollar check, dinner and picture in the local newspaper.
Imber married her first husband in 2002 and that following September gave birth to their firstborn; a boy named Elijah. She found motherhood to be a blessing. Her second and third children, both daughters, were born in 2006 and 2008. Their names are Kylie and Willow. For the majority of their childhood she held the role of mother as a domestic engineer and worked a few part time jobs.
In 2009, following her divorce, she remarried to a soldier in the United States Army. Imber and her household lived on and off the military base in Fort Knox, Kentucky from 2009 until the birth of her fourth child, a boy, in 2011. The couple then divorced. She named the boy Tennison after the poet Alfred Tennyson.
During her time as an army wife Imber was allowed the time and freedom to write again and found a true passion for the art. After her divorce, she and the children moved to Knoxville, Tennessee where she found little time to pursue her passion. Not long after arriving her daughter, Willow, was diagnosed with a rare bone marrow failure disease called Shwachman Diamond Syndrome. Working outside of the home became complicated. Imber found herself falling back into her passions of writing and watching horror movies to escape the stresses in her life every time she had the opportunity. It was during this period of time that Imber decided to combine the two passions and form a career that she could do from home to support her children.
At the age of thirty she was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and lost most of the use of her hands. The rheumatoid arthritis spread fast and was crippling to her entire body. She spent almost an entire year dependent upon others to help her with normal daily activities. After many doctors and the correct medications she was finally able to regain the use of her hands and body and complete her first book; St. Charles Asylum.
